THREE BERLIN ARCHITECTURAL OFFICES TO PLAN THE REDEVELOPMENT OF TACHELES SITE

Three Berlin offices will plan the development and renovation of the Tacheles site together with the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron: Grüntuch Ernst Architekten, Kahlfeldt Architekten and the Brandlhuber + Muck Petzet office.

In addition to the renovation of the buildings at Friedrichstraße 112 a + b, Oranienburger Straße 54 and the former Tacheles, an attractive selection of residential, retail and office buildings, as well as a hotel, are to be built on the site. The gross floor area permitted for the new buildings amounts to 85,000 square metres. In addition, around 44,000 square metres of underground development are planned – primarily for parking, retail, and technical and logistics spaces. The project developer, pwr development, plans to submit its first building applications by the end of November.

Herzog & de Meuron, an internationally renowned architectural firm, is responsible for the project’s overall design concept. This will ensure that the area is designed to embrace both diversity and harmony. The Swiss office is also responsible for planning construction execution on the site of the former Friedrichstraße Passage, which was a major link between Friedrichstraße and Oranienburger Straße at the beginning of the twentieth century. This important connection will be re-established. Herzog & de Meuron will also be responsible for the respectful and careful renovation of the Kunsthaus Tacheles, two building elements directly adjacent to it to the east (residential, office, retail) and four further building elements (retail and residential) on Johannisstraße. A large, green, inner-city plaza will be created on Oranienburger Straße, which will define the area and lend a distinct sense of identity. Vogt landscape architects are responsible for the overall landscape planning concept.

“The area around Tacheles is to be transformed into a public and, above all, vibrant urban quarter with a range of uses. At this location, we will continue the rich tradition of historical city structures – just adapted to the 21st century. Berlin’s architecture has always been diverse and by no means monolithic. And this is precisely the diversity we aim to achieve through our collaboration with various offices. It was clear to us right from the start that we wanted to have Berlin offices on board, especially those with a great deal of experience of the city and its architecture”, explains Sebastian Klatt, Managing Director of pwr development.

The architects from Grüntuch Ernst will plan the hotel on Oranienburger Straße in the north-east of the area. In addition, Armand Grüntuch’s and Almut Grüntuch-Ernst’s office will develop the architecture of the residential building next to the hotel to the south, as well as another commercial and residential building on the square.

Arno Brandlhuber and Muck Petzet are designing the building section to the east of Johannishof, which will contain both apartments and ground-floor retail outlets. They are also designing responsible for the residential building opposite.

The office Petra and Paul Kahlfeldt has been commissioned to refurbish the buildings at Friedrichstraße 112 a + b.

In April, excavators started removing the remains of the old Friedrichstraßenpassage and are currently preparing the site for excavation in November. pwr development plans to start construction and renovation work from mid-2018, with the last buildings ready for occupancy in 2020.
